Week Ahead: Talk Like a Pirate, Days of Service, Police Explorers Meeting

A peak at what's happening in and around Tyson's Corner this week.

  1. September is Library Card Sign-up Month.  Do you know someone who needs a library card? Sign up for a library card online
  2. Governor Bob McDonnell has designated September 15-29 as Days of Service in Virginia. A list of Day to Serve partners and projects can be found at: http://www.daytoserve.org/virginia.
  3. Mark you calendar: Teens and their parents are invited to attend an informational meeting on the Fairfax County Police Explorer post. Explorers offer teens interested in a career in law enforcement the chance to learn more about the field. The meeting is from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on September 24 at 4900 Stonecroft Boulevard in Chantilly. 
  4. Avast! Talk Like a Pirate Day is Thursday. Celebrate at the Patrick Henry Library, where they’re hosting a Talk Like a Pirate Day Variety Show with stories, songs, puppets. The event is at 2:30 p.m. at the library on 101 Maple Avenue East.
  5. Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Karen Garza along with four others will be on a panel discussion called Behind the Headlines: the State of Education in Fairfax County. The forum is from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Fairfax High School, 3501 Rebel Run, Fairfax. The Washington Post-sponsored event is free.
