Students who live in and are registered to vote in Fairfax County but attend college outside the county can now apply for mail-in absentee ballots before leaving for school.

Absentee ballots can be found on the county website, at Fairfax County Government Center, local libraries and offices of county supervisors.

The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 5 general election – which includes a race for governor between Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli – is Oct. 15. The deadline to apply for a mail-in absentee ballot is Oct. 29.

If students are home around the time of elections, in-person absentee voting is scheduled to begin Sept. 20 at different locations in the county until Nov. 2 and on Saturdays from Sept. 28 to Nov. 2. Find in-person absentee locations on the county’s website.

Students attending George Mason University in Fairfax or other schools in Fairfax County might not be eligible to vote absentee unless they meet other criteria under Virginia law. The list of eligibility requirements can be found on the county’s website.

Don’t forget – you can register to vote or check your registration online. You can also check your voter registration on your smartphone using the county’s mobile app
