Fairfax County Police Step Up Pedestrian Enforcement

Following two fatal accidents in the past month, the department kicks off springtime enforcement and education initiatives.

In the wake of an accident that left a 54-year-old Falls Church man dead Thursday night and another last month that killed a woman near the Dunn Loring Metro in Vienna, Fairfax County police are stepping up their pedestrian safety enforcement.

Fairfax County police are still investigating last week's accident.

What they do know: Around 10:50 p.m. Thursday, a vehicle hit Herman Bartlett as he walked across the street in the 5800 block of Leesburg Pike. Lucy Caldwell, a police spokeswoman said Bartlett was rushed to Inova Fairfax Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Caldwell said the driver of the car stayed at the scene and no charged are pending. She also said speed and alcohol were not a factor.

In March, Ai Ying Zhu, 53, of Falls Church was hit by a car and killed as she crossed Gallows Road near the Dunn Loring Metro Station. Police continue to investigate that accident as well.
