K.I.S.S.

Keep it simple and succinct — one of the mantras I continually taught students in my former life as an English teacher. And it’s even truer today.

We’ve become a nation of “skimmers,” or so we’re told. And if empirical evidence is any indication, it’s true. I can’t tell you the last time I read something without skimming. And if I’d seen this April 1 NPR headline, I probably would have been fooled, too.

In Serious reading takes a hit from online scanning and skimming, the Washington Post highlights a reader who admits that in reading online she only gives a site (or a post) “a few seconds — not even minutes — and then I’m moving again.”
