Simplify the Home Buying Process

By Kendra Wright, managing broker of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage's Arlington office

Owning a home is still the American Dream, but the home-buying process can seem complicated and overwhelming, especially to those purchasing a first home. Before you begin house hunting, keep the following tips in mind

  • First, know your budget and be realistic about what you can afford. A real estate agent with an understanding of the local market can help find comparable home prices and determine what is affordable within a certain budget.
  • Know in advance your budget, desired neighborhoods and which “must-have” features you can’t do without is a huge advantage in any home search.
  • The home’s location should be a top priority. Buyers should determine in advance how close they want to live to work, schools or other extended family – neighborhoods and homes can improve over time, but they can’t physically move to another locale.
  • Know in advance your budget, desired neighborhoods and which “must-have” features you can’t do without is a huge advantage in any home search.
  • Don’t get too distracted if certain decorations, paint or flooring don’t match your personal style. If everything else about a home meets your requirements, adding a coat of paint or swapping the shag carpeting for wood floors are easy ways to put the finishing touches on your dream home.

Keep in mind that although the home-buying process can be stressful and chaotic at times, in the end you will have a home where you and your family can create wonderful memories to last a lifetime!
