A years worth of work comes to a head for Fairfax Academy high school students next week, when their clothing lines will take the stage in a community fashion show. “Everyone has little struggles with their collections, so the coolest thing will be able to see all of our friends come together and see that it was all worth it,” said Sarah Dowell, 17. Fairfax Academy’s Fashion Design program trains students for a career in the fashion industry. The program, housed within Fairfax High School, is one of six academies in the Fairfax County Public School System (FCPS). Hakim, 17, is graduating early from George Marshall High School to pursue a career as a musician — and she's already getting noticed.
As the school year draws to a close, most George Marshall High School juniors will be looking for summer jobs or prepping for one more round of SATs. But 17-year-old Sammy Hakim will be graduating early and chasing her dream: a career in music. Hakim writes pop songs – she said she’s compared to Taylor Swift and Kelly Clarkson – and she does so with great success. Her recent single “Mark Me” got her nominated for New Music Weekly’s “New Top 40 Artist” and “Breakthrough Artist” awards, and her tune “Fearless” is a finalist in the International Song Competition. PG-13 film starring Tom Cruise opens Friday in theaters.
In director Joseph Kosinski's Oblivion, you can see a love for and desire to expand on the great classics of science fiction on film. With the most impressive use of IMAX for a feature film to date, in that respect he has created something new and exciting, with what is essentially a 3-D movie where you don't need the glasses. Production esigner Darren Gilford (of TRON: Legacy) and cinematographer Claudio Miranda (Oscar winner for Life of Pi) make, to quote the movie, "an effective team." The visual landscapes of the film and the meticulousness taken in the action sequences are extraordinary. Robert Cole's "The Thought" will greet shoppers at the new Walmart in Tysons West.
Local officials and stakeholders gathered Monday at the site of the Tysons West Walmart for the debut of the public art piece that will grace the outside of of the store. Washington, DC's Robert Cole, who designed "The Thought" on commission, said it was a piece everyone will be able to enjoy. The Walmart could be open as early as September, according to officials. The 79,000-square-foot store will be part of developer JBG Retail's new building, anchored by Walmart and 24-Hour Fitness. Restaurants Noodles and Company and Smashburger have also signed leases. Shoppers at the new Walmart in Tysons West will get to take in some local art while they buy their groceries. Developers JBG Rosenfeld Retail unveiled Robert Cole’s “The Thought” at Tysons West on Monday evening to a crowd of stakeholders and local officials, offering tours of the first piece of its new building at Route 7 and Westwood Center Drive. The public art piece is located directly in front of the entrance to Walmart.
