County Prepares to Launch Bus Between Tysons, Burke
Express Connector service will begin operating Jan. 14.
The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT)’s new Express Connector bus from the Burke Centre VRE station to Tysons Corner will have free preview bus tours and rides Saturday in advance of the bus service’s launch Jan. 14.
The free event, at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Burke Centre VRE station, is open to the public. County officials such as Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova and Sups. John Cook (Braddock) and Pat Herrity (Springfield) are scheduled to attend.
“We invite you to learn more about this no-transfer, convenient way for Burke community residents and commuters to enjoy a stress-free ride to work, take a tour of the new bus and climb aboard to experience the comfortable ride,” Fairfax County Department of Transportation Director Tom Biesiadny said in the news release. “By introducing this new, viable public transportation, we are helping to reduce traffic and connect areas of Fairfax County to each other like never before."
The Burke to Tysons Corner service is the first of three planned bus routes to launch in 2013, FCDOT said. A bus serving routes in Lorton and Springfield are scheduled to begin later in the year.
FCDOT said the Express Connector bus is also the first public transit to Tysons from the Burke area.
The bus will use the new 495 Express Lanes on its route and will pick up travelers from the Burke Centre Virginia Railway Express (VRE) station on weekdays between 6:30 and 9 a.m. and 4:15 and 7 p.m. Buses will also have midday runs departing Tysons at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
FCDOT predicts the trip will take an hour to complete. Riders will pay $3.65 for a one-way fare using a SmarTrip® card and $4 if using cash, according to a news release on the program.
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved the fares for the bus service in November 2012 and collected comments from residents that same month about the proposed bus routes. The plan for the bus service was approved in September 2012.
